Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 6 medium apples Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter cold and cut into small cubes
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans or almonds

Serve With

  • vanilla ice cream optional

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  • Peel the apples and then cut into thin slices or dice into cubes.

  • In a large mixing bowl, toss the apples with the lemon juice to help prevent them from browning.

  • Stir in the granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour to the apples. Toss until all of the ingredients evenly coat the apples.

  • Evenly spread the apple mixture in the prepared baking dish.
  • Combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a medium mixing bowl.

  • Use a pastry blender or forks to cut the cold butter cubes into the dry ingredients. Work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  • Stir in the chopped nuts.

  • Evenly sprinkle the topping over the apple mixture.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. The liquids should be bubbling.
  • Allow the apple crumble to cool slightly before serving. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some caramel drizzle over the top.

Storage Information
Room Temperature: If you plan to eat the crumble within a day or two, cover it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and keep it at room temperature.
Refrigerator: For longer storage, place the crumble in an airtight container or cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or foil and store it in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days.
Freezer: To freeze apple crumble, allow it to cool completely, then transfer it to a freezer-safe container or wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and foil.
