Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking dish.
Peel the apples and then cut into thin slices or dice into cubes.
6 medium apples
In a large mixing bowl, toss the apples with the lemon juice to help prevent them from browning.
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Stir in the granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour to the apples. Toss until all of the ingredients evenly coat the apples.
½ cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Evenly spread the apple mixture in the prepared baking dish.
Combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a medium mixing bowl.
1 cup all-purpose flour, ½ cup granulated sugar, ½ cup brown sugar, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon salt
Use a pastry blender or forks to cut the cold butter cubes into the dry ingredients. Work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
½ cup unsalted butter
Stir in the chopped nuts.
½ cup chopped walnuts
Evenly sprinkle the topping over the apple mixture.
Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. The liquids should be bubbling.
Allow the apple crumble to cool slightly before serving. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some caramel drizzle over the top.
